    Abstract

Does emotional rhetoric on policy issues affect voter support for political candidates? With lower barriers for political candidates to speak directly to the American People through social media and modern technology, how candidates talk matters now more than ever. The study of emotional rhetoric’s relationship with policy issues represents a venture into an important section of political engagement largely unexplored. This causal analysis experiment, utilized a pairwise comparison of aggregate voter support across three policy issues tested (1) Does positive or negative emotional rhetoric result in greater support for the candidate and (2) Whether the effects of positive and negative rhetoric on voter support are consistent across policy issues. Setting up the policy position on the issues to be identical across the difference emotional vignettes we determined that the results indicate positive emotional rhetoric attracts greater support compared to negative emotional rhetoric. The effects of positive vs. negative rhetoric are consistent across policy issues, and the negative rhetoric also consistently attracted less support than the neutral vignettes. The results of positive vs. neutral vignettes are mixed, indicating the effect of positive vignette against a neutral, less emotional vignette varies issue by issue. These findings show emotional rhetoric's impact to be significant and worth exploring on additional policy issues. The political impact of these results is most significant at the primary election level where candidates are more likely to have similar policy positions with competing candidates. These results indicate how candidates can achieve higher levels of support from voters through emotional rhetoric on the tested policy issues.
