What are some effective communication strategies to support grieving peers?
Try not to ask how someone passed away unless they share on their own, willingly. This requires them to relive the experience, which may have been traumatic for them. If a peer steps away from a conversation, a meal, or an event abruptly, give them grace. They are likely still learning their own triggers. Invite them to things as much as you can so that they know you are there for them, while giving them the option to say no or leave early if it is simply not the right time for them. Try not to be hurt if they do not respond to your kindness or outreach as you expected. It can be a blurry time, and a month for you may seem like a day for them.
