Assistant Director / Mentoring

Position Summary

Works under the direct supervision of the executive director for Student Inclusion and Diversity/Multicultural Academic Student Services (MASS). The assistant director contributes to the overall mission of the MASS office by providing strategic leadership, organizational support, education, and advisement for mentoring initiatives and programs. This position works to encourage students to discover the benefit of mentoring relationships and engagement, build connections, connect to resources and explore opportunities to facilitate and inform cultural and communal development and student success. The assistant director provides support for the Division of Student Affairs and MASS in the area of mentoring programs and activities that align with the goals of the department and may collaborate with external department staff around student engagement, retention, progress, and completion initiatives. The assistant director is also responsible for various levels of academic support, post-secondary education preparation, and the increase of student retention and graduation rates for underrepresented student populations. The assistant director will promote identity, gender and culture-specific mentoring competencies and campus diversity through educational programs and services that are outlined in the Leadership Standards Initiative for the University.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education, social work/sociology, leadership, human development or related area.

One year of related work experience in a postsecondary institution working in the area of diversity, programming, advising/counseling, leadership, and/or program development for diverse populations or equivalent combination of education and experience in the areas listed above.

Demonstrated experience working with diverse and underrepresented student populations.

Specific knowledge of conference planning, mentoring competencies and best practices.

Awareness and sensitivity to issues related to target populations.

Must demonstrate a commitment to diversity, inclusive excellence and the academic, personal, intellectual development of all students, faculty and staff.

Ability to effectively plan and implement campus-wide conferences, college mentoring programs, and activities in a timely fashion.

Ability to be self-directed, meet deadlines, and manage multiple tasks.

Exceptional management and follow-through skills.

Demonstrated ability to assess program effectiveness.

Strong communication, organizational skills, and public speaking skills.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team environment.

Must have working knowledge of the Mac computer and software application such as Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree preferably in higher education, social work, sociology, leadership, student affairs/personnel, human development and family studies or a related area of study.

Experience with program development and mentoring initiatives.

Demonstrated commitment to student support, success and development.

Knowledge of graphic design and statistical software.

Duties & Responsibilities

Oversees the planning, design, marketing, execution, and assessment of identity, gender and culture-specific mentoring initiatives, programs, events and community service endeavors to expand initiatives or build capacity of student participation.

Facilitates trainings and workshops for the MASS office, including but not limited to, the Multicultural Student Leadership Conference, Multicultural Career Workshop, Men About Change, Women’s Initiative for Strength and Hope, MAC Scholar Mentoring Experience, and the IMPACT mentoring initiatives.

Provides support and guidance to first-generation college students by creating opportunities to further their academic and co-curricular success.

Develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with faculty and staff to encourage department programming that ensures student success and belonging.

Provides direct leadership for and involvement in developing and overseeing new mentoring initiatives and conferences whilst fostering a sense of cooperation and connection for the campus community.

Works collaboratively with the Division of Student Affairs, the Center for Student Inclusion and Diversity, campus academic departments and residence halls, as well as other campus and Mount Pleasant community partnerships to facilitate the successful recruitment and retention of underrepresented student populations through proactive, educational, and collaborative programming.

Fosters and maintains relationships with college and community partners that provide services that support student retention, benefit student health and well-being, and provide opportunities for academic and professional growth.

Develops student conferences and provides strategic direction of mentoring initiatives along with ongoing support to students that fosters learning around issues related to student success and development.

Conducts and attends some evening programs.

Evaluates mentoring initiatives and assesses and responds to evolving needs.

Performs data collections and analyses.

Provides data and assessment reports and summaries that highlight program accomplishments, challenges and opportunities.

Researches best practice initiatives and market trends.

Maintains a detailed record of projects including plans of work, outcomes and future enhancement recommendations where applicable, and all electronic files within the office/department servers.

Prepares reports for departmental, diversity unit, and ad hoc committees.

Contributes to department/office operations and strategic planning and investigates and shares best practices to advance services, efficiencies, communication plans, and initiatives.

Serves on various campus committees, panels, and events.
