Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning
The Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning oversees all teaching and learning activities; provides leadership in the development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of the district’s Pre-K-12 curriculum, instruction, and professional development programs; and collaboratively leads district and school leaders to ensure that all Malden students thrive and are fully prepared for the future. The Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning serves as a member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet and is the district’s point-person for all matters related to curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
Responsibilities
Develop, document, coordinate, evaluate, and revise curriculum in all subject areas, in partnership with teachers and administrators
Ensure alignment all district curriculum with the standards, concepts and skills in the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Ensure vertical alignment from grade to grade and course to course
Coordinate the selection, adoption, and implementation of exemplary instructional materials aligned with Massachusetts standards, course content and skills, and the district’s instructional expectations
Identify, adopt and manage the implementation of reading and math intervention programs and materials to supplement the standard curriculum and address student’s differentiated needs
Facilitate the development of professional development calendar for administrators, teachers, curriculum directors, coaches, and teacher leaders
Ensure all students have equitable access to the core district curriculum (including students with disabilities and multilingual learners) and that educators have the resources and training needed to effectively support their diverse students
Support principals, assistant principals and teachers to implement and monitor the effectiveness of district curriculum and adopted instructional materials, in collaboration with curriculum directors, coaches, and teacher leaders
Strengthen the effectiveness of classroom instruction in partnership with district leadership, school administrators, and educators, and coordinate the enhancement of the teaching and learning process
Lead the design and implementation of professional development opportunities for teachers, in collaboration with curriculum directors, principals, coaches, teacher leaders and partner institutions
Coordinate the administration of required state assessments (e.g., MCAS and ACCESS) and the ongoing development and implementation of common district assessments (e.g., DIBELS, iReady, and iXL); and lead the effective use of related student data to inform instructional planning and professional development (in collaboration with district leadership, principals, and other instructional leaders)
Lead the district’s efforts to integrate technology in instruction, in collaboration with curriculum directors, coaches, teacher leaders, and the Director of Technology and Information Services.
Assist teachers and administrators with licensure requirements
Supervise and evaluate curriculum directors (and other employees as assigned)
Coordinate the writing, submission, and management of grant proposals for state, federal and private funding; coordinate the implementation of grant-funded programs and completion of related reports
Assist the Superintendent with the overall management and operation of the district
Serve as the Superintendent in his/her absence
Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent
Qualifications
Massachusetts Elementary and Secondary Education licensure as a Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent (or eligibility for this licensure)—Required
Master’s degree or higher in educational administration or related field—Required (an earned doctorate or doctoral candidate status desirable)
Successful experience as a public-school principal—Required (experience in urban public-school settings strongly preferred)
Significant experience in effective teaching and teacher leadership—Required (experience in urban public-school settings strongly preferred)
Strong background in collaborative leadership, instructional supervision, and research-based educational practices
Demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities of the position as evidenced by course work, educational experience, professional references, school- and/or district-level leadership and/or professional experience, and the interview process
Reports To: Superintendent of Schools
Terms Of Employment
Twelve-month (12) work year. Salary to be negotiated with the Superintendent of Schools; benefits as established for all administrative positions.
Performance-based evaluation and compensation in accordance with School Committee policy.
