Crooked Media

Associate Producer, News and Culture

Crooked Media Los Angeles, CA

Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us—one that doesn't just focus on what's broken, but what we can do to fix it. We are a media network that showcases stories, voices, and opportunities for activism that inform, entertain, and inspire action, because it's up to all of us to do our part to build a better world.

Job Summary:

Crooked Media is looking for a talented associate producer for our women led politics and culture show, HYSTERIA, and a selection of our subscription podcasts, including (but not limited to) POLLERCOASTER, INSIDE 2024, and TERMINALLY ONLINE. While this is a political and news centered job, this role will focus on the ways politics intersects with pop culture. So, the ideal candidate has a passion for helping people understand news and politics, as well as what's happening in the wider American culture. We're looking for candidates with strong editorial judgment, who can conduct thorough and organized research and work well under pressure. Please note, this is not an on mic or on camera position.

Crooked has adopted a hybrid work model for our entire staff. We believe that the best work is done in a hybrid capacity as it combines the flexibility of working from home with in-person collaboration. We are ideally looking for Los Angeles-based candidates, or candidates willing to relocate by September 1, 2024.

How You'll Spend Your Time:

  • Participating in weekly and long-term editorial planning
  • Monitoring the news, pitching ideas and guests, researching + interview prep, and fact checking
  • Booking guests and studio time
  • Maintaining assigned show's editorial calendar and working in tandem with other producers on strategic guest booking
  • Preparing hosts for tracking, producing interviews and other show segments
  • Assembling the show elements, which includes pulling clips, editing audio and short video
  • Working cross functionally with the marketing and social team to ensure they have the necessary material to support and promote the show and its segments
  • Liaising with the sales team to ensure hosts have pertinent ad copy for each show and oversee the execution of the read
  • Quality checking episode cuts and publishing the show to our platforms
  • Communicating with hosts and other talent to schedule and facilitate segments

What You'll Bring To The Table:

  • At least 2+ year of news, editorial, radio, or podcast production
  • Demonstrated experience working under tight deadlines or with rapid response news
  • Exceptional copy editing and research skills
  • Understanding of journalism and journalistic ethics
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Proficiency with ProTools, Adobe Audition, Descript or other audio editing software
  • Proficiency in editing short video clips with basic video editing software
  • A passion and day-to-day interest in entertainment/pop culture and news
  • Experience managing the booking process for a weekly show
  • Strong editorial judgment about the news that matters
  • A self-motivated, proactive, creative, accountable, and nice attitude
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure

This job description provides a summary of how you'll spend your time but is nowhere near exhaustive, so other duties may be assigned over time.
