We are looking for a driven Battery Cell Engineer to join us in our mission to contribute to a greener future. The role is a part of our passionate Northvolt Cuberg team based in SF Bay Area, United States.

The Battery Cell Engineer role will push forward the design and development of advanced lithium metal batteries. The Battery Cell Engineer will design research plans, perform experiments, analyze data, present results, and recommend new development pathways. They will collaborate closely with other engineers and scientists at Northvolt Cuberg, as well as external partners, to improve Northvolt Cuberg’s lithium-metal battery technology. In this role, the Engineer will lead technical development projects in areas of cell performance, cell design, cell safety, and/or battery pack integration. We work cross-functionally and collaboratively to serve our collective mission to build a better, more sustainable world.

Key Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Lead technical projects on cell design and drive product development initiatives
  • Define standard test procedures for product validation
  • Collaborate with external partners and suppliers to develop new cell designs
  • Propose research strategies and design experimental plans for battery R&D
  • Contribute significantly in the lab – perform electrochemical and physical characterization experiments, improve existing characterization tools, and develop new tools as needed
  • Generate quality experimental results to inform data-driven decisions
  • Perform failure analysis of prototype and production cells and recommend corrective actions
  • Analyze battery test data, communicate results to the team, and suggest new pathways for development

We Believe That You Have

  • B.S. (required) or M.S. (preferred) in an engineering field (e.g. chemical engineering, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline),
  • Minimum 2+ years’ working experience
  • Strong background in battery fundamentals and battery test equipment and procedures
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation, and standard operating procedures

Bonus Points For

  • Strong data analysis skills (Python or MATLAB)
  • Experience from Startup and/or battery industry
