Job summary: Medical Technology Reporter for Business Team

The Star Tribune is seeking a curious and aggressive Business reporter to provide high-impact news and enterprise coverage of Minnesota’s vibrant and world-class medical technology sector.

Minnesota is home to one of the largest life-science clusters in the country. More than 500 medical device companies operate here, employing about 35,000 people. This ecosystem includes vibrant start-ups and global players such as Medtronic, Boston Scientific and Abbott, whose devices and technology have improved the lives of millions of people around the world.

This is an opportunity to establish the Star Tribune as a go-to source on this industry. You Will

  • Be enterprising and entrepreneurial. Our readers most value news and insightful reporting not seen elsewhere. Staying informed about issues such as product development, patents and intellectual property disputes, and safety and regulatory oversight will result in stories of interest to statewide, regional and national audiences.

  • Be a watchdog willing to hold government agencies and private interests accountable for how they wield power and influence.
  • Collaborate with other reporters on the Health team, your editors and other news leaders to determine daily, weekly and ongoing coverage strategies across multiple platforms.
  • Be committed to employing audience strategies based on real-time metrics and strategic analysis.
  • Collaborate with your editors and members of the Audience team to build avenues for engagement and amplification of your work and the Star Tribune.
  • Leverage other mediums, such as audio and video and the camera on your cell phone, to reach wide audiences.
  • Work regularly from the Star Tribune’s downtown headquarters.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
  • A portfolio of published work demonstrating solid news judgment, deep reporting, engaging writing and comfort with a broad range of topics.
  • A solid grasp of data and analysis tools, and state and federal data practices statutes.
  • An ability to connect with sources and subjects from diverse backgrounds and include overlooked or ignored viewpoints.
  • High standards and a commitment to fairness and accuracy.
  • The ability to multitask and juggle priorities on deadline.
  • A commitment to the Star Tribune’s standards, mission and values, including journalism that reflects the diversity of Minnesota and the Star Tribune’s audience.
