Definition of Class

This position advises and counsels students concerning employment opportunities and education objectives in an effort to prepare students for achieving their education and career goals. The incumbent conducts individual and group sessions to inform students of services, policies, and procedures and to provide assistance in resume preparation and interviewing techniques, and instructs one career a life planning course each semester.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Administers and interprets interest, and ability assessments to assist students in matching interests and strengths with academic majors that lead to various career opportunities.
  • Assesses individual needs and advises students regarding career and/or education objectives.
  • Maintains knowledge of academic majors and how they feed into specific careers; the necessary aptitudes and abilities to be successful in academic majors; and the experiential learning opportunities available in academic majors.
  • Develops and instructs a career and life planning course each semester.
  • Interacts with parents, student groups, faculty, staff, and community agencies seeking assistance in the area of career planning and development and serves as a resource to campus constituents concerning career decision making.
  • Supports students’ major and career exploration, informing about choices, and providing advisement on achieving their career goals.
  • Plans, develops, and facilitates events and initiatives to promote opportunities for engagement among the university community.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff to deliver outreach activities including workshops and related to the career decision-making process.
  • Maintains counseling case notes using current technology and tracks statistical data for monthly and annual reports.
  • Prepares reports, conducts analysis, and develops recommendations for administrative utilization.
  • Participates in the development and execution of recruiting events, including career fairs and other networking activities.
  • Performs related or similar duties as required or assigned.

Essential Functions

These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.

  • Counsels students concerning employment opportunities and educational objectives.
  • Interprets, evaluates, and advises concerning the results of career related assessments.
  • Plans, develops, and conducts programs, workshops and presentations to enhance career and educational advancement.
  • Instructs a Career and Life Planning course each semester.

Education

Minimum Education/Experience

Master's Degree in business, education, higher education, counseling, or a related field from a college or university, conferred no later than the date of hire, or verified in writing by the respective Dean's Office or Registrar's Office that requirements have been met with certainty for the degree to be conferred.

AND

Experience

One (1) year of experience related to the above described duties.
