Sy Syms Casual Staff (TA, Peer Tutor, or Proctor) supports faculty and students by creating opportunities to review class material and improve student performance (TA). As a peer tutor, the casual staff would meet with students one-on-one to help them with coursework. As a proctor, the casual staff would oversee the taking of exams to ensure academic integrity.
Position Responsibilities
TA
Prepares and leads weekly recitation sessions
Prepares practice exams, review booklets, and supplemental lecture materials
Meets with professors to ensure recitations cover topics discussed during primary lecture sessions
Assists faculty
Grades student papers
Provides student support
Responds to student questions and emails
Peer Tutor
Tutors students in various courses according to their qualifications
5 hours/week minimum availability
Proctor
Oversees the taking of exams to ensure academic integrity

This position will report to the faculty and/or chair of the department and is supervised by the Academic Administrator.

Experience & Educational Background
TA
An undergraduate degree and a recommendation from the professor requesting assistance. Having taken the course previously is up to the preference of the professor.
Peer Tutor
Must have received an A or A- in the course and provide a recommendation by a professor to tutor in the course/s.
Proctor
Must have an undergraduate degree
Skills & Competencies
Ability to work constructively with students-- individually and in groups
Basic understanding of pedagogy and ability to instruct
Ability to create outcome-based review lessons focused on measurable success
Salary Range
$16.00 - $20.00 per hour
