As a Controls Engineer in our Troy, Michigan branch, you will be responsible for the design, documentation, programming, and the building of custom robotic Automation Systems. This position requires a strong technical ability in the fields of controls and electrical design and is for a motivated individual who enjoys a variety of responsibility.

What would a typical day look like?

  • Designing and developing new control systems
  • Testing, maintaining and modifying existing systems
  • Analyzing data and presenting findings in written reports
  • Implementation of new projects
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving
  • Liaising with clients, suppliers, contractors and relevant companies
  • Understanding and ensuring compliance with the health and safety regulations and quality standards of the company in which work is undertaken
  • Working collaboratively with process engineers, operations, maintenance and other internal staff
  • Review maintenance issue, process issues, quality issues and equipment issues to create problem solving actions;
  • Accepting responsibility and a level of accountability that is proportionate to the seniority of the position.
  • Process and equipment review during runoffs, and buyoffs at Suppliers.
  • Represents the company in contacts with outside suppliers of equipment, services and systems
  • Utilize existing customer and internal standards as well as references from previous projects to develop and customize specific project application.
  • Coordinate and review with Technical Leaders, Automation Engineers, and colleagues to maintain consistency within a given project.
  • Responsible for producing a quality design on schedule, getting customer acceptance, and assisting as required while the machine is being built and debugged.
  • Research, develop, and document software interfaces.
  • Lay out software structure and writes logic for machine controls and system interfaces and test procedures
  • Design Human Machine Interface (HMI) screens.
  • Check software programs for errors.
  • Provide debugging support for intermediate to complex machine applications in steady state and during fault recovery.
  • Handle current scope program responsibilities.
  • Self-starter, self-directed with extremely good influential, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Documentation of electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and cooling systems (i.e.: schematics, ladder diagrams, etc.)
  • Work with other members of the control systems design department and other groups to continuously improve methods of integrating controls technology, with the goals being enhanced safety, enhanced functionality.
  • Experience with vision systems would be beneficial.
  • Robot programming experience would be beneficial but not a requirement.
  • Able to read electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic prints and design electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic prints.
  • Understanding of communication network architectures protocols Interfacing and communication with devices; Analog, Fieldbus, Ethernet, Device Net, etc.

What qualifies you for this opportunity?

  • An Engineering Degree Electrical / Controls Engineering or Electronics Technology and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in designing controls software, or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in controls engineering with strong ability to quickly learn and apply controls knowledge
  • Highly motivated and talented Sr. Controls Software Designer for our Machining Engineering department.
  • As the Sr. Controls Software Designer, you will have the opportunity to start a project at the beginning and follow it through final customer acceptance.
  • Extensive software programming experience competence with various PLC (mainly Rockwell Allen Bradley, Siemens is Plus), HMI, and software development platforms. Working knowledge of systems, networks, and database applications
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated experience in understanding and following customer specifications
  • Robust manufacturing background with heavy emphasis on production related controls experience
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to lead in the technical aspects of the role
  • Must have at least 5 years of experience in PLC logic and programming (Preferably Allen Bradly Studio 5000, TIA Portal, Siemens is a plus with the desire to learn more
  • A drive to learn and expand skills and responsibilities is a must
  • Human/machine interface design
  • Provide control system hardware and software designs including programmable logic devices, power distribution, I/O networks, human-machine interfaces, and cost estimating tools while following GM common controls hardware and software specifications
  • Prior Work Experience in tooling Systems with knowledge of Common Controls Hardware and Common Controls Software Standards
  • Good Knowledge of GM Common Controls Architecture; GCCS, GCCH is a plus. Green-Lock recommended
  • Thorough knowledge of the GM Mfg. processes, mainly in GA & Body shops, quality systems
  • Good communication & interpersonal skills
  • Experience with tier one suppliers such as (Gestamp, Challenge, etc.)
  • Ability to write logic from scratch and think outside the box.
  • Working Knowledge of plant floor systems including Error Proofing, Production Monitoring and Control, Andon Systems, Upload/Download, and Compare, Throughput and Material Call
  • Ability to travel to OEM and plant sites, up to 30% within the US
  • Duration of Travel – 2-3 weeks at any given time
  • An ability to work weekends during non-production times for our customers
  • Reliable transportation and an ability to travel; Controls Engineers at Classic should have the ability to travel within the US and Canada

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to feel objects, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, talk and hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required for the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
