Position Overview

Our organization is seeking an experienced Copy Editor to join our Editorial team. In this role, you will ensure accuracy and credibility of each of the BSA’s magazines (Scout Life and Scouting) in both print and digital formats working closely with assigned editors. Your primary job is to ensure the accuracy of grammar, spelling, and punctuation although you will also fact-check content as necessary. You may also make suggestions and changes that affect the overall tone of content if it doesn’t quite fit with our brand. Role tracks all deadlines and materials throughout the publishing process, ensuring the meeting of strict production deadlines. Our ideal applicant is passionate about the correct usage of grammar and punctuation, and has experience working with in-house style guides and rules. This position reports to the Supervisor, Editorial Operations.


Responsibilities

  • Responsible for fact checking, copy editing and proofreading.
  • Manages workflow of copy-editing projects.
  • Updates print and digital layouts.
  • Oversees style guide maintenance.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Job Competencies:

Knowledge of: Grammar, punctuation, and style rules; Associated Press (AP) style or Chicago Manual of Style; current events and general information; Boy Scouts of America and its publications; SEO best practices for digital content.

Skill in: Attention to detail and accuracy; written and verbal communication; problem-solving and critical thinking; using word processing and Adobe editing software; organization and time management.

Ability to: Collaborate effectively with editors and writers; work independently and meet deadlines; work effectively under pressure; prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously; maintain confidentiality.


Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field from an accredited college or university.


Qualifications

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in ­­­­­digital and print copy editing, proofreading, and fact-checking, or related experience.
  • Must pass a criminal history background check.
