Wentworth Institute of Technology

Dean of the School of Computing & Data Science

Job Description

Wentworth Institute of Technology (WIT) invites applications, expressions of interest, and nominations of candidates in its search for the next Dean of the School of Computing & Data Science (SCDS).

Wentworth Institute of Technology was founded “to furnish education in the mechanical arts.” Today, just under 4000 undergraduates pursue associate and bachelor’s degrees in 23 STEM, design, and management disciplines across five schools, including Architecture & Design, Computing & Data Science, Engineering, Management, and Sciences & Humanities. In addition to offering certificate programs, graduate students may pursue 13 master’s degrees. The hallmark of a Wentworth education is the robust co-op program, featuring hands-on experiences that offer depth of learning, career-relevant experiences, and valuable networking opportunities. Professionally relevant education is uniquely woven into the fabric of Wentworth, where students are encouraged to make connections across disciplines, in classrooms, labs, and as active participants in industry. The Wentworth campus is conveniently located in the Fenway neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, and within walking distance of cultural, educational, sports, and medical hubs. The 31-acre campus in the heart of Boston boasts a tree-lined quad, modern and traditional residence halls, diverse campus amenities, as well as 60+ state of the art labs and studios.

The School of Computing & Data Science (SCDS) provides small-class settings and state-of-the-art labs, where students learn through real-world examples and a hands-on curriculum that prepares them with practical and emerging skills needed for today's workforce. The school enrolls just over 775 students, with 30 full-time faculty members and 6 staff members. Students have the opportunity to take classes across the following areas: Applied Mathematics, Computer Networking, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Data Science, and Information Technology. Each student within SCDS will graduate with at least two semesters of work experience with a co-op employer. Wentworth’s and SCDS’s institutional reputation is built on its commitment to hands-on, applied learning that values its graduates’ immediate contributions to the current economy.

The Dean is the chief academic, fiscal, and administrative officer for the School. The Dean will provide leadership, advocacy, oversight, and management for the entire school. The Dean is responsible for carrying out Institute and School policies and providing leadership for and coordination of all educational, developmental, logistical, and professional activities of the School, as well as for maintaining open communication with and soliciting input from the faculty, staff, and students. The Dean reports to the provost and collaborates closely with the other Deans as well as others across WIT. The next Dean will be focused on supporting the school's growth in undergrad, graduate, and online, allocating and generating resources to support this growth, and cultivating SCDS's next generation of partnerships that will enhance students’ experience and success, all while creating a culture of inclusive excellence.

The ideal candidate will hold an earned doctorate in computing or a related discipline in SCDS and will have achieved a distinguished record of scholarly and professional achievement. In addition, the candidate must possess significant administrative experience and a record of progressive leadership appropriate for this role.

The search committee for the Wentworth Dean of Computing & Data Science will begin accepting nominations and reviewing applications immediately and through the Summer of 2024. Requested application materials include a letter of interest and a curriculum vitae. Although applications will be welcomed until a new Dean is selected, for best consideration, all candidates should submit materials by early September to the following address: [email protected]
