Description Of Work
The University Press has an opening on its Editorial, Design, and Production Team at one of two levels: Designer/Compositor or Senior Designer/Compositor.
Summary of Duties: Design and typeset assigned number of full-length books per year, both cover and interior, and other projects as assigned, to include: select cover art, design cover (front and back), determine type specifications for interior, conduct art review and adjustments, create line art as needed (tables, charts, etc.), create typeset pages, input proof corrections, create final print-ready PDF for print vendors, and export files for ebook production as appropriate. Consult and coordinate with other staff (acquisitions editors, project editors, and print production coordinator) to obtain information and maintain schedules. Conduct quality-control checks of typeset files produced by others; conduct other design and typesetting reviews as required. Oversee cover routing approval process, corrections, and final file preparation for assigned new frontlist titles and also adjustments to reprint/new edition titles and covers as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications
Designer/Compositor
Bachelor’s degree in graphic or commercial art or related field plus 3 years of design and layout experience; equivalent education/experience considered. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, esp. InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Ability to organize multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize own work schedules, and meet deadlines.
Senior Designer/Compositor
Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related field plus 6 years experience in the graphic arts field. Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite, esp. InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator; knowledge of typography and page layout; and a developed sense of composition and color. Broad knowledge of book publishing industry. Strong communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Designer/Compositor and Senior Designer/Compositor
Experience in designing book covers and producing typeset book files using the Scribe XML Well-Formed Document Workflow. Experience in producing graphic design materials. Experience in purchasing and obtaining permission for cover art. Familiarity in cover art research and book cover design. Knowledge of typesetting and file preparation demands using Scribe Well-Formed Document Workflow. Demonstrated experience in setting and meeting deadlines, ability to coordinate schedules with others, and work independently.
