Electrical/Firmware Engineer

The Electrical/Firmware Engineer role is responsible for researching, developing, designing, and testing products containing embedded firmware.


Essential Functions

  1. Design, prototype and verify systems for various embedded applications
  2. Develop and maintain firmware for embedded platforms
  3. Create and manage documentation for active projects
  4. Interact with clients and help with the development of customized embedded solutions
  5. Test and debug embedded software and applications
  6. Develop hardware and software specifications
  7. Participate in code and design reviews
  8. Generate change orders, new product release, product specs, hardware drawings, and software control documents
  9. Provide technical assistance to clients and sales team
  10. Develop tools and techniques for testing and verification
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in electrical/computer engineering or
  2. A minimum of 5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  3. Minimum two years of experience in embedded software or hardware development
  4. Direct experience in programming in C for real-time systems in 8, 16 and 32-bit embedded environments
  5. Knowledge of operating system concepts in embedded systems (RTOS)
  6. Experience developing applications with strict timing requirements
  7. Able to read/understand electrical schematics, and debug hardware problems
  8. Knowledge of common communication interfaces/protocols such as RS485, I2C, SPI, UART, TCP/IP and UDP.
  9. High degree of familiarity with in-circuit emulators, digital storage oscilloscopes etc.
  10. Experience with version control and bug tracking tools


Preferred Qualifications

  1. Strong technical knowledge of fire alarm systems, including hardware, software, and networking.
  2. PCB Layout experience (or an interest in developing PCB layout skills)


Work Environment/Physical Demands/Travel

This job operates in a professional business office or home office where standard office equipment is routinely used, such as computers, photocopy machines, fax machines, telephones and filing cabinets. This position is largely a sedentary role. Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times. Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities.


This is a full-time position, on-site at the Maple Grove office. The hours of work are Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week. An occasional shift in hours may be necessary to accommodate business needs.
