Emergency Department Technician - Emergency - Full Time/Days - Req#2013531684

Brief Description

Job Objective:

The Emergency Department Technician provides care in the Emergency Department (ED) guided by the hospital and department policies and procedures under the direction/supervision of nurses and/or Emergency Department providers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist licensed personnel in implementing the nursing process in direct patient care.
  • Gathers appropriate equipment and assist the nurse and / or provider in procedures, including casting, lumbar puncture, thoracotomy, and laceration repair in accordance with hospital and unit policy and procedure.
  • Performs CPR in accordance with hospital and unit policy.
  • Responsible for maintaining, cleaning and quality control of point-of-care testing equipment; including HemoCue (glucose & hemoglobin), mini-UA analyzer, urine pregnancy test, occult stool.
  • Participates and assists in maintenance of a safe, comfortable and therapeutic work environment.
  • Participates in patient / family education.
  • May maintain department inventories and orders supplies.
  • Performs, transmits and logs ECGs as ordered.
  • Applies splints, cast removal, crutch training, ace wraps, wound cleansing and dressing applications per provider order.
  • Informs biomed/engineering of equipment needing repair, tags broken equipment, inputs repair order into computer portal system.
  • Provides normal clerical support as needed to support unit functions such as order entry, filing, faxing, Reddinet system updates as needed.
  • Assembles and maintains medical records according to hospital and unit practice.
  • Engage in a high degree of interaction with patients, visitors and family members to facilitate a positive experience.
  • Transport patients.
  • Answers telephones and directs calls appropriately.
  • Retrieve, review for accuracy and/or coordinate statistical data to validate the quality of clinical work and patient charges.
  • Compiles appropriate paperwork for patient transfers according to EMTALA regulations, and hospital policy.

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Assist in special projects and assignments.
  • May be requested to assist with new hire training.

  • Obtains vital signs and reports abnormal vital signs to nurses and / or providers.
  • Applies continuous pulse oximetry.

  • Place patients in the appropriate treatment area under the direction of a nurse or provider.
  • Documents care delivered accurately and in a timely manner.

Education and Experience:

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current staff must be compliant within 24 months of 3/24/15 revision date.

Experience

  • Any one of the following: Emergency Medical Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant, military medical training, or currently enrolled in a nursing program; or equivalent experience and education required.

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • Current BLS certification.
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Certification, initial certification required at first available hospital training class. Annual recertification required.
  • Annual Restraint Certification/Competency.
  • Annual Joint Commission Review/Competencies required at first available hospital training.

  • Work often performed under stressful, emotional, and physical conditions.
  • May be exposed to contaminated instruments that may cause infections, burns, or cuts.
  • May be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation.
  • Accepts additional workload during times of unexpected circumstances, e.g., high activity, high census, and sudden emergencies.
  • Frequently lifting, pushing and pulling up to and over 50 lbs obtaining assistance as required to transport patients, supplies, and required equipment to various treatment and diagnostic area throughout all areas of the hospital and hospital grounds.
  • Frequent bending and twisting.
