Job Description

Reporting to the EVP of Operations, the General Manager (GM) of the Trackwork Division will be responsible for the profit and loss (P&L) performance of the division and overseeing its operations, maintenance, engineering, and production planning. This leadership role, based in our Kansas City, KS office, will drive modernization initiatives to enhance efficiency and productivity across the facility. The GM will play a pivotal role in strategic decision-making to ensure the division meets its financial and operational goals. Additionally, the GM will spearhead efforts to achieve our ambitious growth targets by leveraging technological advancements and process improvements, positioning the division for sustained success.

Responsibilities

  • Prioritize worker safety by collaborating with the Director of Safety and shop supervisors to audit shop activities and provide necessary training.
  • Advocate for and ensure the department is equipped with the necessary tools and equipment to efficiently execute production orders.
  • Identify and prioritize capital improvement opportunities and collaborate with management on the annual capital budget.
  • Drive continuous improvement throughout the Trackwork Division by providing feedback and input on new and existing initiatives.

  • Provide oversight and support for operations to achieve job-specific, daily, weekly, and monthly production goals.
  • Develop and publish policies and processes, and conduct regular audits to ensure compliance among workers, reporting findings consistently.
  • Review process flows for manufactured items, identifying opportunities to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Regularly review production orders, purchasing requirements, and engineering specifications to ensure timely order completion and meet customer demands.
  • Participate in weekly production meetings, offering feedback on the prior week and planning for upcoming tasks.
  • Quantify and challenge the capacity of various areas within the shop.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing levels and evaluate the shift design of the division.
  • Champion the use of Manufacturing Execution Systems (ME) and understand the operation's pace relative to its potential.
  • Drive efficiencies in internal processes, including estimating, quoting, production order processing, and engineering collaboration.
  • Collaborate with quality management teams regarding the company's internal quality management system, external audits, and customer quality audits.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of special trackwork, machine shops, and industry-specific processes.
  • Experience in project management and equipment commissioning.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate decisiveness using sound judgment and work cooperatively with others as a team, including those with differing or opposing views.
