Responsibilities

Licensed Certified Genetic Counselor functions independently in direct patient care and serves as genetic expert within the multidisciplinary healthcare team. Genetic Counselor’s clinical responsibilities include the following components:

  • Elicit pertinent medical and family history
  • Assess patient and family risk for genetic conditions
  • Identify and coordinate genetic tests and other diagnostic studies necessary for diagnosis of inherited conditions 4) Interpret genetic tests in the context of patient medical and family history
  • Translate and ensure patient understanding of complex genetic diagnosis and information. Genetic counselor routinely meets with patient’s physician care team to collaborate on treatment plan options, implement the treatment plan and follow-up/evaluation. Genetic Counselor is responsible for the evaluation of patient adaptation to genetic risk or condition and provides culturally responsive support through a range of genetic counseling skills. Genetic Counselor serves as a patient advocate by identifying patient needs and referring to appropriate internal and/or community resources. Genetic Counselor’s non-clinical roles include:
  • Provide education about a wide range of genetics and genomics information to lay and community audiences
  • Participate in department meetings, and quality improvement projects
  • Mentor prospective genetic counseling students and physician residents through observation and shadowing experiences 4) Complete relevant continuing education to maintain licensure and certification

Job Requirements

Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling

Medical Genetics

American Board of Genetic Counseling certification within 24 months of hire date

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS)

Must obtain Supervised Practice License within 2 months of hire date

Must be fully licensed by Ohio State Medical Board in Genetic Counseling within 12 months of hire date

Job Responsibilities

Demonstrates and utilizes a depth and breadth of understanding and knowledge of genetics and genomics principles. Constructs targeted personal and family histories and pedigrees. Identifies, assesses, orders, facilitates, and integrates genetic/genomic testing options in genetic counseling practice. Interpret genetic test results in the context of patient’s medical situation. Assesses individuals’, families’, and populations’ probability of conditions with a genetic component based on pertinent information. Manages genetic counseling cases (medical, testing, billing/prior authorization, and psychosocial components), including navigating patients to pertinent follow up resources.

Uses a range of genetic counseling skills and models to facilitate informed decision making and adaptation to genetic risks or conditions. Promotes client-centered, informed, non-coercive, and value-based decision-making. Applies genetic counseling skills in a culturally responsive and respective manner to all clients. Supports and advocates for patients and families during emotionally intense situations.

Educates patients about a wide range of genetic and genomic information during genetic counseling sessions. Serves as a resource for physicians and medical staff on genetic and genomic concepts and genetic testing options. Write concise and understandable clinical progress notes in a timely manner. Effectively presents on genetics, genomics, and genetic counseling issues to lay public audience.

Acts in accordance with ethical and legal principals of genetic counseling profession and the policies of TriHealth. Advocates for responsible and ethical use of genetic and genomic health information. Demonstrates a self-reflective, evidence-based and current approach to genetic counseling practices. Establishes and maintains professional interdisciplinary relationships in both team and one-on-one settings. Seeks out and complete relevant education opportunities to maintain ABGC certification. Participates in department meetings, and supports the sharing of clinical resources within the department.

Genetic Counselor will demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, professional demeanor, ability to work as a multi disciplinary team members, comfortable working with patients and families in emotionally intense situations and relationships, ability to prioritize tasks.

Identifies and participates in research opportunities and internal assessments as appropriate and with available opportunity. Participates in organizational and departmental meetings, committees and workgroups as necessary. Supports sharing of team resources such as template letters, lab updates, education materials.

Continues to develop expertise in medical genetics with continuing medical education at the level to maintain certification or above. Seeks learning opportunities outside the area of medical genetics that will complement provision of clinical care.

Other Job-Related Information

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to travel to various TriHealth facilities throughout greater Cincinnati, as needed, for work purposes. Job responsiblities and outcomes are based on Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling: Practice-based competencies for entry level genetic counselors (2019).
