Position Summary: The Division of Family and Community Engagement and External Affairs (FACE +EA) includes a diverse portfolio of offices, including Family and Community Empowerment, Marketing and Digital Media, Office of Language Access, Press Office, Office of Knowledge Management, Communications, and Office of Intergovernmental Affairs (IGA). These teams work together to assist the Chancellor in serving the largest school system in the country, composed of approximately 1 million students and ensure that parents, students, and all New York City communities have the information they need to be informed advocates for their children, neighborhoods, and schools.

IGA is responsible for the important work of fast, accurate, and responsive communication and engagement with elected officials and other education stakeholders. Under the direction of the Executive Director of IGA, the Governmental Affairs Coordinator will support priorities, develop and deliver cross-functional operational and community support for IGA in its engagement with elected officials and other education stakeholders on behalf of the New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) and serve as the NYCPS’s primary liaison to elected officials within the borough of Staten Island. Performs related work.

Key Relationships: Elected officials and their staff members, community and parent leaders, principals, superintendents, Central offices and divisions.

Responsibilities

Community Affairs

  • Serve as point of contact and liaison to elected officials and their offices.
  • Proactively engage, brief, and solicit feedback from elected officials (and other stakeholders) on education-related issues affecting their schools, neighborhoods, and districts.
  • Answer and respond to inquiries and correspondence from elected officials and other stakeholders regarding NYC Public Schools (NYCPS) policies, initiatives, and constituent-related concerns.
  • Regularly represent the NYCPS at public and private meetings and forums.
  • Assist in the planning, execution, and management of public meetings, briefings, events, school visits and other initiatives organized by the IGA and the NYCPS.
  • Maintain IGA constituent-service tracking systems and facilitate the office’s timely response to letters.
  • Update and maintain IGA contact information, lists, and related databases of external stakeholders.

Operations

  • Support the Executive Director with day-to-day operations, including fielding telephone inquiries, making transportation arrangements, and documenting expenses.
  • Coordinate live and virtual engagement/outreach events, programs, and presentations.
  • Assist in distribution of public notices and documents to external stakeholders.
  • Assist in the collection of information and drafting of agenda, run of show, and briefings related to engagement/outreach events and convenings.
  • Invite and inform elected officials and other stakeholders of NYCPS events and manage RSVPs.
  • Assist in the planning, support, and execution of public meetings, events, school visits, and other initiatives organized by IGA and the NYCPS.
  • Help structure events with elected officials and communities to elicit full and meaningful community participation.
  • Schedule and maintain IGA’s monthly calendar of meetings events and liaise with internal and external participants as necessary.
  • Maintain and update IGA’s filing system of internal and public documents.

Qualification Requirements

Minimum

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one (1) year of experience as described in “1” above.

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements, individuals must have two additional years of the experience described in "1" above

Preferred

  • Strong attention to detail, extremely well-organized, with the ability to meet frequent and changing deadlines.
  • Excellent project management, interpersonal, and leadership skills working with education and non-education personnel, internal and external to NYCPS.
  • Familiarity and/or work experience with elected officials or government agencies.
  • Familiarity with the NYCPS system.
  • Experience working with community/parent issues in education or a related setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications, e.g., PowerPoint and Word; advanced in Excel.

Salary: $69,844 - $90,000

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
