Responsibilities Of The Inventory Accountant
- Inventory Management: Maintain accurate inventory records, including tracking of stock levels, adjustments, transfers, and disposals. Perform regular reconciliations of physical inventory counts with system records and investigate discrepancies. Monitor and report on inventory valuation, including cost of goods sold (COGS) and inventory obsolescence.
- Financial Reporting: Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual inventory-related financial statements and reports. Assist in the preparation of year-end financial statements and audit schedules related to inventory. Ensure compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
- Cost Accounting: Analyze and update standard costs for all inventory items, including raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods. Monitor and analyze variances between actual and standard costs, and provide explanations and recommendations for corrective actions.
- Process Improvement: Identify and implement process improvements to enhance inventory tracking, reporting, and accuracy. Collaborate with supply chain, production, and merchandising teams to optimize inventory management processes and reduce costs.
- Systems Management: Maintain and update the inventory management system to ensure accurate data entry and reporting. Work with IT and other departments to troubleshoot and resolve inventory system issues.
- Compliance and Controls: Develop and document internal controls and procedures for inventory management and accounting. Ensure compliance with internal policies, industry regulations, and external audit requirements.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with operations, procurement, and sales teams to forecast inventory needs and manage stock levels. Provide financial insights and support for inventory planning and decision-making.
- Ad-Hoc Analysis: Conduct ad-hoc analyses and projects related to inventory management, cost control, and financial performance.
- Minimum of 3 – 5 years of inventory accounting experience, preferably in the fashion/apparel industry.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and inventory accounting principles.
- Proficiency in inventory management software and ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, and Oracle).
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with data analysis and reporting tools.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy and integrity in financial reporting.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA or CMA is preferred.
