Essential Job Functions And Expectations

  • Enforces all federal and state laws and City ordinances relating to public safety and welfare; performs all duties in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and standards of safety.
  • Issues traffic tickets and warnings, detects DUI suspects, assists with accident reconstructions and investigations, and participates in traffic/law enforcement education efforts.
  • Serves warrants, summonses, subpoenas, civil, and other official papers.
  • Assists with criminal investigations. Interviews witnesses, complainants, and victims; interrogates suspects; gathers physical evidence and preserves it for court; provides case follow-up as needed; provides testimony and presents evidence in court as necessary.
  • Administers first aid and assists EMTs at emergency scenes as necessary.
  • Provides escort services for the protection of persons and/or property, assisting stranded motorists, providing funeral escorts, directing traffic, providing security and crowd control at special events, etc.
  • Participate in special operations and undercover assignments as needed.
  • Must be able to conduct short-term and long-term narcotics investigations.
  • Maintains required physical fitness and required level of proficiency in the use of firearms.
  • Remains on-call 24 hours per day, seven days a week, for emergency response.
  • Completes general clerical work as required including, but not limited to preparing reports and records, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, answering the telephones, etc.
  • Prepares and/or generates a variety of documents including crime trends, field identification cards, accident reports, and NCIC entry incident information, public complaints, warrants/courtesy summons preps, incident/supplemental/investigative reports, and deletion forms.
  • Refers to the SC Code of Laws, City ordinance handbook, department handbook, street index map,

incident reports, DSS, Civil Court, investigations, other agencies, TR130, NCIC, SC State laws, and traffic fines.

  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as SRO, dispatchers, the public, Sheriff's office, judges, solicitors, victims, suspects, coworkers, and the SC Highway Patrol. Assists other law enforcement agencies and jurisdictions as required.
  • Operates a variety of machinery and/or equipment such as radios, service vehicles, Tasers, ballistic

vests, firearms, duty belts, pepper spray, handcuffs, computers, radar, audio/video equipment. Maintains assigned equipment and vehicles. (Note: we do not operate dispatch)

  • Participates in neighborhood and community efforts such as speaking at school and community events, assisting the elderly with various tasks, mentoring youth and adults, and providing food, clothing, and shelter for the homeless, attending neighborhood meetings, and other efforts that enhance police/community relationships.
  • Communicates with law enforcement agencies around the jurisdiction throughout shifts in order to pass on vital information and to help build a good working relationship.
  • Other duties as assigned or directed.

Qualifications And Requirements

  • High School Diploma supplemented by a minimum of four (4) years of experience as a SCCJA Class I officer. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered at the discretion of the Chief of Police.
  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License.
  • Ability to use a firearm.

Physical Requirements And Working Environment

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment. Requires medium-to-heavy work that involves walking, standing, running, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting, pushing, or pulling objects, and also involves exerting up to 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and up to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis. Must be able to defend oneself from assault and to restrain suspects of varying weights.
