Overview

We are seeking a full-time Lead Compliance Engineer on our Automotive OEM team in our Olathe, KS location. In this role you will be responsible for creating and implementing complex regulatory compliance plans for major product development programs within the Automotive business at Garmin.

Essential Functions

  • Provides key regulatory contributions for ensuring consistent adherence to compliance standards/procedures during the creation/implementation of complex compliance plans for major products or programs bearing directly on organizational objectives
  • Leads/explains compliance planning for system architectures consisting of multiple transmitter modules
  • Understands rationale of enforcement authorities and works with Legal, Program Management, Business Development or other resources to propose a compromise
  • Develops complex routes to compliance that are new to Garmin
  • Offers peer regulatory assessments in areas of expertise
  • Effectively represents Garmin among industry partners, peer groups, and regulatory agencies
  • Researches, conducts feasibility studies, and provides business based recommendations to Compliance Engineering management on regulatory approval requirements for many countries
  • Provides regulatory input to product development plans and concept documents, including review comments on nearly all EMC and safety design aspects for circuit design and PCB layout
  • Significant contributor to design reviews across multiple product types
  • Mentors and provides guidance to less experienced Compliance Engineers (Compliance Engineer 1, 2, & Senior).
  • Demonstrates broad understanding of Garmin’s business model, including operations, production, sales and marketing and initiates new procedures when warranted
  • Defines general approaches and specific solutions to compliance problems considered state of the art
  • Completes broadly defined complex tasks including taking conceptual ideas and putting them to practice
  • Regularly demonstrates creativity/ingenuity to develop reliable solutions to complex problems and has a strong ability to perceive/quantify compliance-related risks that are a threat to project schedules


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering or related field AND a minimum of 9 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrates a successful track record of regulatory solutions
  • ESD, EMC, EMI, product safety testing and international type approvals involving countries around the world
  • Understands production and operations issues as they relate to compliance engineering
  • Possesses knowledge and capability that are substantial and critical to Garmin's regulatory needs
  • Demonstrates understanding of power sources, thermal hazards, flammability ratings, EE, ME, ID and Tech Pubs issues as they relate to compliance regulations
  • Experience reviewing EMC and safety design aspects for circuit design and PCB layout
  • Demonstrates mastery in and can communicate advanced concepts such as LPS (limited power source), limited current circuit, single fault condition, insulation systems, CTI, etc.
  • Possesses a thorough knowledge of Garmin processes and procedures


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with Bluetooth SIG Certification, Wi-Fi Alliance, or other short range devices, IEEE Ethernet compliance,
  • Familiarity with business to business country compliance interactions in industries such as aviation, automotive, medical, marine, transportation industry (complex products that we partner with an OEM)
