Lead Instruction Librarian

Provide leadership and operational management of the University Libraries’ instruction program for undergraduate and graduate students. Undergraduate instruction would include a scaffolded approach over four years and across disciplines to teach core information literacy and data literacy principles. Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Public Services, this individual will work collaboratively with the Public Services librarian team to set instruction and related outreach priorities in alignment with the Libraries’ Strategic Plan. This includes training the librarian team in revised instruction plans and delivering instruction. This position will work collaboratively with the Research Data Services team to ensure foundational knowledge about data literacy (finding datasets, how to cite data sources) and subscriptions such as ICPSR, Statista and PolicyMap for the SHU community. investigate instructional methods for information literacy, data instruction and media literacy in new formats. The candidate will oversee promotion and scheduling of library instruction in collaboration with administrative staff. Other responsibilities include participation in liaison work for assigned departments, collection development and reference.


Duties And Responsibilities


  • Provide leadership for and coordination of delivering information literacy and data literacy instruction in all modalities; help incorporate various technology formats (e.g., streaming video) into instruction/learning objects; teach instruction sessions.
  • Head assessment of learning outcomes of information and work collaboratively with the Research Data Services team on data literacy competencies across undergraduate and graduate student academic programs.
  • Collaborate with library and teaching faculty to integrate appropriate data and information literacy competencies in a scaffolded manner across disciplines.
  • Partner with other library and University units as needed to support instruction.
  • Deliver excellent library services and prioritize needs in a busy, dynamic environment.
  • Perform liaison, collection development and reference as assigned.
  • Prioritize multiple tasks and work productively in a team-based environment.
  • Contribute to the scholarly communication efforts of the University Libraries.


Required Qualifications


  • ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information studies.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years’ experience in work relevant to this position.
  • Experience with information and data literacy instruction and assessment.
  • Evidence of effective outreach and delivery of programming to key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and creatively in a collaborative environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Analytical abilities and data visualization skills that will allow incumbent to report on instruction


efforts, fluency with MS Excel or other reporting tools.


  • Ability to work effectively with and enjoy assisting faculty, students, colleagues, and


community members in a diverse, multicultural setting.


  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects.
  • Strong patron service skills and the commitment to serve students, faculty, and staff.
  • Commitment to librarianship, scholarship, and service, which are stated requirements for


tenure within the University and University Libraries.

Desired Qualifications


  • Knowledge of trends in instructional technologies strongly preferred.
  • Coursework or professional experience with instructional design, learning theory, and/or the


scholarship of teaching and learning.


  • A second master’s degree or doctorate will be required for tenure.
