Job Title: Mechanical Engineering Manager

Department: Engineering

FLSA Status: Exempt

Mechanical Engineering Manager plans, organizes and directs mechanical design & engineering staff to meet company objectives for project design, new product development and improvement of existing product lines by performing the following duties personally or through subordinates.

Essential Functions

  • Review customer drawings, specifications, electronic media and any other supplied information for accuracy and compatibility with product and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Lead Mechanical design & engineering staff according to company policies and procedures to effectively achieve Company objectives.
  • Oversees key projects, processes and performance reports, data and analysis. Plans documentation system suitable for maintaining project design information for company use.
  • Selects, develops, trains and supervises staff. Supervise department personnel related to project assignment and engineering functions to be performed, according to project needs.
  • Revise processes and documentation, as required, for purposes of improvement in quality and/or production efficiencies.
  • Produce engineering documentation required to adequately describe the manufacturing process and documentation, including drawings and instructions.
  • Interface with electrical engineering and/or other departments to resolve issues that mutually affect or are affected by the project scope of work. Assures adequate cross-talk between design disciplines, as well as production and Technical Service.
  • Approves and submits proposals to management for consideration and allocation of capital funds or allocates funds from the department budget.
  • Develops and implements methods and procedures for monitoring projects such as preparation of records of expenditures, schedules, progress reports, and staff conferences to inform management of current status of each project.
  • Working with the Director of Operations, reviews and monitors product quality and process improvements and new product development.
  • Act as company liaison to outside manufacturing sources to communicate manufacturing process, documentation and inspection requirements.
  • Responsible for OSHA compliance and FMEA process.
  • Anticipate market trends for technological characteristics and new emerging technologies.
  • Cooperation with sales department for proposing technical solutions, estimates and descriptions; customer visits when required.
  • Lead and meet the expectations for deliverable completion deadlines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position manages all employees of the department and is responsible for their recruiting, performance management, training and other typical personnel management.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and scanners.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This is largely a sedentary role; however, some walking and carrying of up to 10 lbs. for several hundred feet is routine. Ability to use ladders for taking measurements is sometimes required.

Travel

This position requires up to 10% travel. Some of the travel is international.

Required Education And Experience

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required.   • Mechanical Engineering degree or similar/related degree with five to ten years recent engineering management experience.
  • Master degree preferable; understanding of structural design, hands-on recent proficiency with SolidWorks, working knowledge of hydraulics/fluid dynamics and automation is required.
  • Experience in design and/or manufacturing environment for automated equipment/machinery for customers in the auto, building products, and foam part manufacturing industries. All work is for customers external to the organization on a project-by-project basis. Typical project load at any given time is up to 50 projects at various degrees of completion.
  • Hands-on leader with demonstrated experience at successful high-performance team building. Ability to work in and foster a team environment.
