The Aurora City Attorney’s Office is legal counsel for the Mayor, City Council and all city agencies, departments and boards and commissions. Our office participates in financing public improvement projects, drafting and reviewing city ordinances, drafting and negotiating contracts, litigating civil matters in state and federal court, advising City Council on state legislation, and providing general counsel and advice to City Council and city staff. The Criminal Division handles the prosecution of petty offenses and misdemeanors occurring in the City. The mission of our Criminal Division is to enhance public safety and to achieve justice through the effective prosecution of municipal offenses.
The Paralegal, under the direction of the City Attorney, Deputy City Attorney, and Manager of Client Services investigates facts, researches law, and prepares documents to assist lawyers in the City Attorney’s Office.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Liaises with City departments and clients to request and obtain necessary documents and case related items.
- Assists in coordinating waivers of service for summons and complaints or subpoenas.
- Reviews, compiles, distributes and saves electronically filed and stored case related materials, including from Colorado Courts, ECF, EEOC/CCRD via case portals.
- Conducts investigations in relation to legal matters.
- Schedule and participate in interviews or meetings.
- Prepares correspondence, both electronic and postal, and shell pleadings.
- Preparing, responding, and drafting objections to written discovery requests.
- Writes memos and meeting summaries.
- Assist with drafting legal documents, including pleadings, discovery, memoranda, and correspondence.
- Compiles exhibit notebooks.
- Files documents electronically.
- Assists as needed at trials or hearings.
- Investigates and responds to unemployment claims from former City employees.
- Manages case files and internal file management systems.
- Maintains calendaring systems and coordinates meeting scheduling with internal and external participants.
- Maintains electronic library of legal opinions, memoranda, policies, legal education, reference materials and research materials.
- Performance of administrative duties such as invoice processing and departmental tracking monthly report upkeep.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
