AmeriCorps

Partnering for Native Health

AmeriCorps Anchorage, AK

Alaska Pacific University will serve as the host institution for a one-year AmeriCorps program aimed at facilitating the Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) initiative, catering specifically to American Indians and Alaskan Natives. 15 members will be recruited, strategically placed in various locations including Alaska, Michigan (Traverse City), Oklahoma (Tahlequah, OK), New Mexico, and Utah (Montezuma Creek). Each AmeriCorps member will play a pivotal role in offering comprehensive legal assistance to low-income patients at partnering hospitals or clinics serving tribal communities. The program encompasses a broad spectrum of legal practice areas, including cases that foster income growth, housing stability, and personal safety. The MLP utilizes legal advocacy as a strategic tool to address the social determinants of health. Responsibilities will include conducting periodic training sessions and presentations for healthcare providers at medical facilities, alongside regular consultations to ensure seamless integration of legal and healthcare services. While AmeriCorps members will operate independently at their respective locations, they will also be part of a cohesive national collaborative network aimed at improving social determinants of health for American Indians and Alaskan Natives. The Partnership for Native Health (PNH) Network will equip each member with the necessary tools to cultivate new hospital partnerships, fostering a synergistic approach to addressing community needs. Additionally, each member will have a local supervisor for day-to-day activities, ensuring guidance and support throughout their service. It's important to note that this program is inclusive and accessible to all, regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender identity or expression, political affiliation, marital or parental status, genetic information, or military service.
