Shriners Children’s is looking for a full-time Physician Assistant to join our clinic team at Shriners Children’s Philadelphia. Our Physician Assistants primarily work in clinic with the attending surgeons seeing patients and completing patient histories and physical exams, placing orders, and writing notes. Physician Assistants also run the walk in fracture clinic and apply casts.

Schedule 4 10-hour shifts Monday - Friday. No weekends/holidays. No call.

Team 3 Physician Assistants, 11 staff physicians, plus residents and fellows

Patient Volume Variable, but 15-20 patients per day on average

The Physician Assistant provides comprehensive, evidenced based health care services to the pediatric population. The PA obtains comprehensive health history, performs physical examinations, formulates a plan of care and treatment, prescribes/performs diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and procedures and participates in patient and family education.

Provide Patient Care

  • Evaluates follows up patients in clinic, demonstrates appropriate assessment skills and dictates note in appropriate format (SOAP, for example). Presents pertinent findings and plans to the supervision physician for review, when indicated.
  • Gathers information from the history and physical exam of new (screening) patients, pre-op patients or patients being admitted to the hospital, formulates assessments, proposes plan of management, dictates H&P within 24 hours and signs them in a timely manner.
  • Makes pre visit phone calls to selected patient applicants with complex young spine problems to answer parent questions about our specialty services. Obtains pertinent history, reviews pre-visit studies, summarizes and reviews with attending to facilitate appropriate initial clinic evaluation.
  • Evaluates and dictates progress notes on requested studies of long distance post op patients, and reviews with supervision physician as indicated.
  • For discharged post op patients, promptly enters clinically sensitive information such as new prescriptions/refills for pain medication or acute clinical changes in the electronic medical records (SHCIS) to decrease risk for duplication or medical error.


Communication/Interpersonal Skills

  • Provides additional education and reassurance to parents of children with complex problems during clinic visits, as needed.
  • Seeks ongoing feedback from supervising physicians to continually improve clinical skills.
  • Collaborates with the other health team members demonstrating the commitment to the philosophy of family centered care and care coordination principles. Discusses and plans patient care with clinical care coordinators/nurses.
  • Serves as a medical resource to coworkers seeking answers to clinical questions about which the physician assistant may have some prior experience or fund of knowledge.
  • Monitors parent/patient scoliosis.


Job Related Personal Responsibility

  • Advances knowledge and skills in pediatric orthopedics, child development and related health fields by participating in continuing education, literature reviews, teaching conferences and in-service programs.
  • Achieves goals set forth in performance plan.

Master of Physician Assistant Studies required

Experience

3 Years Physicians Assistant Preferred

Licensure and Certification

Licensed in state of practice Required AND

DEA License

Basic Life Support (BLS) Required AND

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Required
