St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

Postdoctoral Research Associate - Developmental Neurobiology

A postdoctoral research associate position is available in the lab of Dr. Jasmine Plummer.

This project seek to use innovative, cutting edge strategies to understand genetic risk of disease, specifically in the case of cancer what genetic drivers drive early pathogenesis of cancer and elucidate their molecular mechanism to harness better therapeutics or screening methods.

Position Responsibilities:

The Plummer lab will provide training and mentoring on cancer genomics, single cell methods and analysis, manuscript preparation, grant writing and oral presentation. Laboratory exposure will include single cell multi-omic methods, spatial omic assays, gene editing profiling and integrative computational analysis. Outcomes from fellowship will include: early career investigator grant submissions, mentorship of interns, extensive genomic knowledge for future paths in academics or industry. The Plummer lab provides a dynamic, collaborative environment to foster innovative research leading to high-impact scientific publication is highly encouraged and will be supported by the lab’s research infrastructure.

The fellow will have opportunities to interact with leaders in the fields of cancer and translational research within and outside the institution through existing global collaborations of the Plummer lab. In this position, Dr Plummer encourages all fellows to actively present their work in larger forums such as international conferences and global consortia for exposure and networking.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

PhD

Special Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

Genomic techniques (single cell RNAseq, PCR, library preparation)

Cell Culture (maintenance, CRISPR gene editing, basic cell phenotyping assays)

Histology (sectioning, staining, IHC) Linux, R/ python coding experience

About the lab and St. Jude:

The Plummer lab applies multi-omic tools to understand how molecular pathways control normal cells of origin and their contribution to the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders and cancer. Genetic studies have identified thousands of common variants and rare mutations that are associated with numerous diseases, but for the vast majority of genetic associations, the underlying functional mechanisms are unknown. Approximately 90 percent of trait- and risk-associated alleles lie outside of protein coding regions, suggesting that common variants lie in regulatory regions and cause disease by regulating target gene expression. To connect genes to their onset of pathogenesis, my research focuses on using functional genomic approaches for identifying risk genes and causal variants and understanding how they drive disease development in their cells of origin. While deeply entrenched in the world of genomics and bioinformatics, the Plummer lab seeks to foster an excitement for scientific questions, hence projects often evolve in many different directions depending on the trainee’s interest, skill sets and hypotheses. Dr. Plummer invites a collaborative team environment where trainees can be exposed to a variety of laboratory techniques, cutting edge technologies and computational analysis.
