What You Will Do At Precinct One

Harris County, Commissioner Precinct One is looking for a part-time Program Assistant in our Youth Education Department. This position is an integral part of the Programs Division. The Program Assistant will assist in the developing, implementing, and managing of youth enrichment programs and will also actively engage with participants of all ages.

The successful candidate will assist in providing educational and recreational, community services and opportunities for participants. They must be highly organized as they provide clerical and planning support for various programs, activities, trips, and events for the Youth Education in Precinct One's Community Centers.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative support for the operation of the community center (filing, emailing, scheduling, ordering, generating reports, and data entry).
  • Actively participate, monitor, and track information for community programs and events.
  • Assists in planning and overseeing special events.
  • Other job duties as assigned

Requirements

What you will bring to Precinct One

Education:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent


Experience:

  • One (1) year of related work experience in youth (school age 5+) development (daycare, afterschool programs, church, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite


Licensure:

  • Valid Drivers License (Texas upon hire)
  • Complete the Harris County driver safety course


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates ability to think creatively to assist in special event planning and marketing
  • Knowledge of proper compositional practices to aid in writing and proofreading.
  • Dependable.
  • Excellent verbal and nonverbal communication skills.
  • Work independently without supervision.
  • Create and implement programming.

Preferences

Certification:

  • CPR and First Aid Certified preferred or obtained within six months of employment (preferred)

  • Typical job hours are from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.; Preferred availability 9 am - 6 pm
  • However, hours may vary based on the business needs of the department, and some weekends, evening hours, or holidays may be required during special events.


Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Ability to exert up to 40 pounds of force frequently and lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • This job operates in a Precinct One Community Center in both an indoor and outdoor environment. Exposure to various weather conditions and temperature variations may be encountered. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This role uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, and copiers.

About The Programs Division

The Program Department's mission is to enhance the quality of life and access to opportunity for all residents by providing an array of programming that is: Innovative, Equitable, and Collaborative. Currently Precinct One has 7 active Community Centers that provide over 20 program areas.

About Precinct One

There are four precincts in Harris County. The four elected commissioners, along with an elected county judge, serve as members of the Harris County Commissioners Court, the administrative head of the county’s government. Commissioner Rodney Ellis represents the constituents of Precinct One.

With approximately 1.17 million residents, Harris County Precinct One is a diverse, urban precinct that covers 363 square miles. Precinct One’s multi-racial, multi-ethnic population is roughly 33 percent African American, 38 percent Latino, 21 percent Anglo, 6 percent Asian, and 2 percent other or multiple races.

Precinct One, which includes 876 miles of road, stretches south to Brazoria County and reaches into eastern and northern sections of Harris County. The Precinct’s territory includes a large section of Downtown Houston, including the Downtown Harris County Courthouse Complex, Toyota Center, Minute Maid Park, and the BBVA Compass Stadium. Other notable landmarks include the 263-acre NRG Park Complex and the renowned Texas Medical Center. The Precinct is also the higher educational home to Houston Community College, Rice University, Texas Southern University, the University of Houston, and the University of St. Thomas. Precinct One manages more than 20 parks, 11 community centers, numerous hike-and-bike trails, three maintenance service centers, and several area offices, all of which provide an array of services to Precinct One residents.
