JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Trauma Specialist
JOB OVERVIEW: Responsibilities include trauma registry management including but not limited to case finding, data input, data analysis, and reporting. It also involves support of the Trauma Services Coordinator and Trauma Medical Director. This position is held accountable by the standards of the Washington State Department of Health Trauma and EMS Division.
DEPARTMENT: Trauma Services
WORK HOURS: As assigned.
REPORTS TO: Unit Manager
Prerequisites:
Associate Degree or higher in healthcare-related field or one of the basic sciences preferred.
Basic anatomy and medical terminology courses or equivalent required.
Successful completion of American Trauma Society (ATS) Registry Course preferred or completed within one year of hire
Successful completion of Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM) Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) course preferred or completed within one year of hire
Successful completion of WA DOH Trauma Registry class or equivalent required or must complete within 3 months of hire.
Two years of experience in acute care, trauma, and/or emergency services setting.
Experience with reimbursement coding, injury severity coding, and injury scaling is strongly preferred.
Experience In Clinical Database Maintenance Preferred.
Experience in retrieving and presenting data in various reporting formats.
Required to work towards and successfully attaining professional certifications including but not limited to:
Certified Specialist Trauma Registrar (CSTR) within 3 years of hire
Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale Specialist (CAISS) within 2 years of hire
Qualifications:
Must demonstrate clinical knowledge including anatomy and medical terminology.
Ability to spell correctly, use accepted grammar, and write legibly.
Competency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
Above average typing skills with an emphasis on accuracy.
Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Possesses interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with internal and external customers.
Demonstrates critical thinking and strong analytical skills.
Possesses excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize requests and assignments.
Ability to produce accurate work and meet deadlines.
Ability to function in a setting with a wide variety of duties and occasional interruptions.
Self-directed with initiative to function independently as needed.

Performance Responsibilities:
Ensures trauma registry compliance
Responsible for compiling statistics, preparing reports, generating reports on trauma populations and performing data searches for trauma related research projects.
Maintains patient confidentiality including confidentiality of sensitive hospital performance improvement information.
Data Collection
Identifies patients to input into the trauma registry per trauma program inclusion/exclusion criteria.
Collects and analyzes data on trauma patients concurrently through EMR Reports.
Looks for possible quality/safety issues and reports to Trauma Program Coordinator when found.
Performs basic data collection of demographics and coding of clinical and follow-up data from all sources.
Data Entry
Enters data into the trauma registry.
Abstracts, assembles, enters, and codes clinical data with accuracy.
Resolves routine coding issues/problems and appropriately seeks assistance from Trauma Program Coordinator.
Data Reporting
Submits data to the Washington State Trauma Registry quarterly, and the National Trauma Data Bank yearly as requested.
Produces reports from trauma data base in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint or similar programs as requested.
Generates reports for trauma Quality Management, education, billing, and other services.
Prepares requested trauma registry data for meetings
Data Validation
Participates in process of validation of registry data.
Participates in quality assurance and improvement activities to ensure accuracy of data collection and content.
Other:
Will be required to travel to appropriate DOH classes and unique Trauma Courses as directed by Trauma Program Coordinator.
Will learn basic incident command and management knowledge to support disaster situations in the hospital.
Performs All Other Related Job Duties As Required.
