Writing Support Coordinator

Carlow University is currently accepting applications for our Writing Support Coordinator position.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide in-person and online writing tutoring at the undergraduate and graduate level (12-15 hours/week), subject to semester demands.
  • Implement specialized training for all CAA Peer Tutors in writing. Initial basic writing training sessions are conducted with new hires and in-depth topics are provided on an ongoing basis (twice a semester) throughout a Peer Tutor’s employment.
  • Create, revise, publicize, and facilitate workshops specific to writing concerns (APA, literature review, etc.). Workshops are in-class, recorded, and/or provided for the general Carlow community.
  • Reach out and collaborate with graduate and undergraduate faculty to support overall writing goals and specific writing projects as needed.
  • Maintain and keep department online resources site up-to-date.
  • Create materials and support for English language learners.
  • Create marketing for CAA-sponsored writing support and social media.
  • Contribute to end-of-year department user data and survey data processing.
  • Participate in campus events as needed and represent CAA on University committees, as required.
  • Familiarization and assistance with scheduling system.
  • Stay updated on best practice and research in the field of writing center scholarship.
  • Teach one section of SKW I or II as an adjunct each semester.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to speak to groups of varying sizes

  • A thorough understanding of his/her discipline (writing and communication skills)
  • A commitment to student success and a familiarity with the issues and strategies to accomplish this goal
  • Ability to view and critique student writing in a way that encourages learning
  • Sensitivity to students with diverse backgrounds and learning needs
  • Ability to establish rapport and a positive learning environment with traditional and adult students and with faculty and staff
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality and professional demeanor
  • The ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Thorough understanding of the functions and operations of an academic institution.
