- [Instructor] Let's chat about three specific autistic traits you may see in the workplace: special interests, hyper focus, and preference for sameness. To start, autistic people often find a topic that captures their attention. Sometimes, these are referred to as special interests, and when work correlates with these, it can lead to more satisfying and rewarding vocational matches. While engaged in a special interest, autistic people may also experience what is known as hyperfocus. Hyperfocus is a term that refers to the ability to focus so strongly on a task, the passage of time and internal sensations may go unnoticed. Hyperfocus can contribute to higher productivity, but sometimes, these special interests can consume attention and make transitioning to a new task challenging, which is important to be aware of.
