- While there is more awareness of autism in the workforce today, many people still don't accurately understand what autism is. Researchers McMahon and team found that employer's self-perception of their knowledge of autism is much higher than their actual knowledge. So what is autism? Autism is a developmental disability that affects sensory processing, executive functioning, and communication in social interactions. It can include language impairment, repetitive behaviors, and characteristics that make socializing hard for some.
