- While there is more awareness of autism in the workforce today, many people still don't accurately understand what autism is. Researchers McMahon and team found that employer's self-perception of their knowledge of autism is much higher than their actual knowledge. So what is autism? Autism is a developmental disability that affects sensory processing, executive functioning, and communication in social interactions. It can include language impairment, repetitive behaviors, and characteristics that make socializing hard for some. We view it as a neurological difference or diversity of the brain and cognition that results in unique thoughts and behaviors. - So, that's the definition. But why does a course like this matter so much?
