- When we talk about the employment experience, whether the experience is for an autistic or non-autistic employee, it's best to break it down into three parts: orientation, onboarding, and check-ins. Many people get orientation and onboarding confused. Often they're interchanged, but I'd like to set a clear definition of each before we move forward. Orientation is the first experience once the employee is hired. This is the part where you welcome them to the organization, help them finish their employment paperwork, and teach them how to function day to day in your organization. And most importantly, it's where human resources hands off the employee to the hiring manager and the employee begins to learn more about their specific job. This is where onboarding comes in.
