- Have you ever heard of sensory processing? It describes someone who has a heightened sensitivity to their environment and the stimuli around them. And here's something you might not know: 90% of autistic individuals experience the sensitivity. But the good news is creating a sensory-friendly workplace is something employers can easily do. So let's chat about what that might look like in the office. First, there's texture. People may react to the textures of uniforms, office chairs, and materials they need to handle for work. When this happens, the ability to focus on work becomes difficult and productivity and engagement may decrease. Creating an environment where people feel safe asking for alternatives will increase their job satisfaction and motivation. Texture in food is also another significant sensory challenge.
