The impact of multiple diagnoses

- It's essential to understand that many autistic people live with co-occurring medical diagnoses and disabilities that may impact their daily experience. What do I mean by co-occurring? Well, a co-occurring medical diagnosis means someone has more than one disability or diagnosis, and for anyone, multiple medical diagnoses can substantially limit life activities. For autistic people, it can elevate the presence of autistic traits. This is a really important consideration, because additional diagnoses may not be obvious. They can be either visible or non-visible. Autism sometimes co-occur with other diagnoses that fall under the umbrella of neurodivergence, such as ADHD, dyslexia and dysgraphia. Quiet workspaces and assistive technology can make a big difference for individuals with diagnoses like ADHD or sensory processing challenges.
