- The words you choose when talking about and speaking to autistic colleagues are critically important to autistic people. Many of us in the autistic community have experienced countless years of discrimination, stigma, and labels. In recent years, stereotypes have been formed from how autism is portrayed in movies and TV shows. Societies worldwide are making changes, but it's a slow process. One of those changes is a shift in understanding autism from a deficit model to a strengths-based model. - These are demonstrated through two ways of viewing autism, which are called models of disability. You see, the medical model views autism as something to be cured. In other words, the medical model sees autism as something that's wrong and needs to be fixed. Then there's the social model.
