From the course: Azure VMware Solution: Planning and Troubleshooting Basics

Understanding Azure VMware Solution

- [Instructor] Now that we have developed an intuition for why use Azure VMware Solution, it is time to go back and take a deeper look at the diagram that I showed you momentarily in the previous video. As I've said earlier, Azure VMware Solution combines VMware's compute, networking, and storage running on top of dedicated bare metal hosts inside the Microsoft Azure Cloud. Because vSphere is running on bare metal machines, customer can get the same performance and resilience that they are used to when running VMware on premises. The service is jointly engineered by Microsoft and VMware. This means they deliver you the initial environment, they provide you the updates, they remediate any issues with the software and the underlying hardware. In addition, you are able to take advantage of Azure native services as shown here in this diagram. Azure SQL Database is a good example. In order to use Azure VMware Solution, you don't need to have an on-premises setup. However, if you do have an on-premises setup you are able to take advantage of the on-premises setup connected to AVS using something like the ExpressRoute that's shown in the diagram, and take advantage of moving your workloads from the on-premises environment to AVS Cloud. So to summarize this diagram, let me bring up another slide because we said a lot of things in the previous slide. So Azure VMware Solution delivers your VMware-based private cloud in Azure. It supplies you the hardware and software deployments that are fully integrated and automated with Azure. The minimum deployment is three hosts, but you can add more hosts if you need to, and we'll get into a lot more detail there. Microsoft manages and maintains the cloud infrastructure and software. So you have single point of contact. And finally, Azure VMware Solution supports adjacency. So we saw that in the previous slide, that you can take advantage of not only the VMware functionality but also take advantage of the cloud native services. So up until now I have talked about Azure VMware Solution from the perspective of Azure. Some of you who are probably coming to this course with the background of VMware and less so about Azure, let me summarize from your perspective what Azure VMware Solution is all about. So first and foremost, dedicated bare metal servers which are provisioned with the ESXi hypervisor. So you use software such as the VMware vCenter for managing the hypervisor and the vSAN. You are using the VMware NSX-T which is the software defined networking for vSphere. You're using the VMware vSAN for data store. And then finally you're using VMware HCX for workload mobility. So these are the terms that you may be familiar with if you're coming from a VMware environment, that's what make up the Azure VMware Solution. And then the final point noted here on this slide is that all of these resources that we talked about, they depend on the Azure underlay, which means any connectivity between the workload VMs and connectivity to Azure is all provided by the Azure underlay. The final thing that I want to talk about as part of this clip is, so where is Azure VMware's solution available in Azure? And this is an important benefit, that this service is growing rapidly. In fact, what I'm going to do is I'm going to go over to the browser for a moment, and let me bring up all of the regions. And it is much easier to look at where this product is available. I'm inside the products available by region on the Microsoft page. Let's just type Azure VMware Solution right here. And as you can see here, and there's just select. As you can see, Azure VMware Solution is available across the world in 42 different regions. And why is this important? This is important because you might be working with a customer, but it is important for them to make sure that their data stays in a certain region for compliance requirements. And by providing Azure VMware Solution across these regions, Microsoft is giving you this option to ensure that your compliance, your data needs are being met. So with this, we conclude this video where we took a deeper look at the Azure VMware Solution.
