Displaying the two essential sets of body language cues

- In the workplace, we evaluate managers and leaders for two sets of nonverbal signals. The first is warmth, likability, empathy and the second is power authority status. Displaying both warmth and power cues is the essence of effective body language. There are however, situations where emphasizing one set of signals over the other gives you an advantage. This was the case with Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve were managers being groomed to take on larger leadership roles and each faced a different business situation. Adam was asked to facilitate a collaborative meeting in which all participants would be encouraged to share their thoughts about an upcoming project. Wanting to appear confident and assured, Adam prepared before the meeting, he stood with hands on hips and feet wide apart in the high power pose that Amy Cuddy popularized in her Ted Talk.
