Myths and truths of deception detection

- "You can count on my support." "It wasn't my fault." "You are next in line for promotion." Wouldn't it be nice to know when someone is bluffing and wouldn't it be great if exposing deception was as easy as it looks on television or in the movies? But of course, it's not. One problem with deception detection is that it's misnamed. It should be called stress detection because for most people, the act of lying triggers an observable stress response. Remembering to look for deviations from someone's baseline behavior. Here are some body language signals that indicate stress. An increased blink rate. A rise in vocal pitch. Misalignment between what's being said and what the speaker's body is doing, like saying no while nodding yes. Incomplete gestures, like a shrug that uses only one shoulder.
