- A sales manager I know evaluated his team's comfort level by noticing how they held their coffee cups. He found that the more insecure someone felt, the higher they held their coffee. People with their hands at waist level were more comfortable than those who created a torso barrier by holding their hands chest high. With this insight, the manager spent additional time making sure that everyone felt included. When he saw lowered coffee cups at the next meeting he knew he'd been successful. That's only one example of the advantage you can gain by reading body language. For leaders and managers, the most informative body language signals are engagement and disengagement. Engagement indicates interest or agreement and disengagement can mean resistance, disappointment or disagreement. Let's start with eye contact.
