What is cloud administration?

- A cloud administrator is a technology administrator who handles cloud computing services for their organization. As a cloud administrator, you'll have many jobs you'll need to manage. You'll need to find areas in your infrastructure that make sense to move to the cloud. That could include email, storage, virtual machines, containers, and many more. Some things may make more sense to stay on-premises based on privacy rules and costs, but your job will be able to make sure the resources you do move to the cloud are the right ones for your company. Once you have your resources set up in the cloud, you'll need to maintain them. This includes any trouble tickets from users as well as alerts that may come up due to outages or issues of reaching storage or other resource thresholds. You'll need to patch and do updates on resources such as virtual machines since you'll control those operating systems. Exchange Online updates will be handled by Microsoft. Besides Microsoft resources, you'll need to know how to manage Linux as well. Many times, applications are developed for Linux servers, which you can create virtual machines to manage. Applications such as MySQL, MS SQL, and other database products would be a good idea to understand. You don't need to be a programmer, but you should be able to install and set security permissions to any of these products, as well as creating databases and securing access. If you're an assist admin that's not dedicated to any one field, it's still important to be educated in the field of cloud administration because a majority of companies have at least some resources in the cloud. Azure may not be the only cloud provider of choice. You'll need to understand Amazon Web Services, also known as AWS. The interface is very different from Azure. Google Cloud is also coming on strong, so it would be a good idea to create an account there as well. In order to move into higher-end positions in cloud and other IT administration positions, it's a good idea to have a degree in computer information systems, cloud administration, or InfoSec, along with various industry-wide certifications. After creating a test account, you can set up many resources on a trial basis, so there may not be any cost. For some resources, this may not be possible, but you can usually keep costs low in your test environment with various promotions and discounts for students. The burgeoning field of cloud administration isn't slowing down anytime soon. So start learning about all of these emerging technologies and get ready for an exciting career.
