- I have to tell you, I love being in a factory. I love being in the middle of making stuff, and I'm always fascinated by how all of the people, processes, and technologies have to work together. We can start with the associates who assemble products and the technicians who operate machinery. There are a lot of these jobs, and they often don't require you to have a degree, but they require attention to detail and lots and lots of practice because the three things that matter in every factory are safety, speed, and quality. Then, you have supervisors and managers who plan what to make, set schedules, and monitor the results. They're often focused on collecting metrics called key performance indicators, or KPIs, and using those to make decisions. The operations managers often report to a general manager or a chief operations officer. These folks try to align the costs and investments made in factories with the overall business strategy.
