The emotional patterns of leaders with presence

- Leaders with strong presence feel the same emotions as everyone, but they do something else with them. Anger, fear, despair, it's all there. But even in crisis, they turn inner turmoil into confidence-inspiring action. They experience their feelings, they express them with poise. Here's an example. Former U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell, spoke about leadership to 8,000 people at a conference. After his speech, someone asked a rude, invasive, cruel question about something private that had nothing to do with Powell's topic. The person asked, "I understand your wife "has been in treatment for mental instability. "Would you like to comment on that?" There was a gasp in the audience, then silence. It's the sort of moment that's ruined the reputation of many public figures who overreact and seem unhinged or underreact and look lifeless.
