- Now it's time to wrap our minds around SCORM. So, let's begin by breaking down the acronym, SCORM, which stands for Shareable Content Object Reference Model. All right, so to put it in simpler terms, SCORM is a reference model or basically a set of instructions for the objects or pieces of content you want to share with others. The shareable objects are your courses and the components making up your courses. So, to say your elearning course is SCORM-compliant means you followed this set of instructions when creating it and preparing it to be hosted on an LMS. The good news is most elearning authoring software will do most of the work for you when publishing your course to an LMS. So, why was SCORM developed in the first place? Well, it was back in the 1990s, when the U.S. government was starting to create a lot of online training across their various departments.
