- Most choices are simple. What to wear to work, what to eat for lunch whether to go to sleep or watch your favorite show. But tough career decisions tend to be complex. And before we dive into problem solving strategies you need to be aware of pitfalls that could slip you up. In my work with thousands of leaders and professionals over the last decade there are three stumbling blocks I've seen come up the most. Once you understand them you can take steps to prevent them. First is people pleasing or putting other people's needs and opinions ahead of your own. For instance, as soon as you have to make a big decision do you poll other people for their input? By doing so, you are teaching yourself that others' views are more important than your own, and that you don't think your judgements are valuable, valid or worthwhile unless others agree.
