- Now more than ever, we're faced with tough career decisions that seem to place passion and practicality at odds. Most notably, should you pursue a job or career that you're passionate about, or one that pays you well? You have to start by determining what role you want work to play in your life in the first place. Because it doesn't need to be your end all, be all. Dr. Amy Wrzesniewski, a professor at the Yale School of Management, has researched how people identify with their work and found three different orientations. Those who see work as a job, mainly value money, and see employment as a means to afford them the things they love. Those with a career orientation mainly see work as an opportunity for advancement and a way to build their skills.
