Setting direction
- Cross-functional teams need clear direction. Expectations for team member participation and the project's goals and objectives need to be laid out explicitly. Each team member needs to understand how their work contributes to broader project success. Participation expectations include working hours, decision-making authority, meeting ground rules, guidance on giving and receiving feedback, and work quality expectations. Set project goals and objectives. How are you going to define success? When's the team going to be done with the project? How will you measure performance? Clearly define each person's deliverables. Let them know when they're due. If there are dependencies, spell them out so they understand why their work is so critical. At one point, I was implementing a new website for our entire division.
