Have you ever heard someone say feedback is a gift? You may have internally cringed and rolled your eyes at this, and I understand. You expose yourself when accepting feedback. In the best-case scenario, you're receiving constructive information about performance, but in the worst-case scenario, it could feel very personal, painful even. But there's a different way to think about feedback. Let's start with the body. Yes, your human body. When you receive feedback, the reptilian brain, specifically the amygdala, hijacks your body. You go into fight, flight or freeze mode. And that's because at a visceral level, critique feels threatening. Taking the brain back to equating the feedback to, oh, no, the tribe may desert me. So you may experience sweaty palms, dilating pupils, and an increased heart rate.
