- As a program manager in charge of several projects or more, you can't know every detail, there just isn't time and you can't have enough technical knowledge to even understand everything that's happening in all of the projects. Also, things keep changing. So at any given time, you can never be completely up to date with the state of play on every detail of every project. So you have to delegate, but a more tricky question is how much you need to know and how closely you need to monitor what's going on in your various projects. In the ideal world, you'd have very competent and trustworthy project managers and they would run everything for you. But of course, in reality, nobody's perfect. And you might have managers who you don't know very well. So you don't know if you can completely trust them. And there might be reasons why they wouldn't tell you everything.
