- Jumping into a cold swimming pool can be hard. You have to steel your nerves and psych yourself up to make that frigid leap, and it's the same for investing. Trying to make the first move can leave you standing at the edge of the pool. Whether you invest for yourself or through an advisor, the best way to jump into the pool is to understand what a portfolio is and what could be the right way to build one for you. At the core of traditional investment portfolios are two asset classes, stocks and bonds, either individual or as funds. Now, there's plenty of other ways to build a portfolio through real estate, or owning businesses, or cryptocurrency, but for now let's stick with stocks and bonds.
